As a celebrant, I’m often asked how couples can make their ceremony truly theirs — a reflection of their story, values, and the things they love most. For many, that includes their beloved horse who has been a loyal companion through life’s adventures. Now I love to get creative, and I was recently asked to come up with some beautiful ways to include your hoofed bestie in your celebration.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a grand entrance, this could be your moment! You might ride your horse to the ceremony or have them escort you partway (venue permitting) or perhaps your partner arrives on horseback — romantic, striking, and unforgettable. Of course, it depends on the location, the horse’s temperament, and how comfortable you both are!

Your horse could even play a special role in the ceremony itself. With a calm handler, they might carry your rings in a small pouch (we often see dogs do this!) or wear a pretty floral garland. Of course, not every horse is suited to such a task — my daughter’s ex-racehorse, lovely though he is, would definitely find it all a bit too exciting!

For those pocket-sized equine partners smaller in stature think confetti ponies — a light-hearted moment your guests will adore.

After your vows, imagine walking or riding away together, symbolising unity, love, and shared journeys. Whether it’s a quiet woodland path or a sunset ride, it’s a moment straight from a storybook and what fabulous photos you will have!

However, for a subtler but deeply meaningful touch, consider weaving a few strands of your horse’s tail hair into your handfasting ribbons – this I can easily arrange. Combine it with materials that reflect your colours — silk, linen, or even a leather rein from your bridle — for a personal, living connection that quite literally binds your hands in love and partnership with your beloved horse.

Your ceremony should be as unique as your story — and if your horse has trotted beside you through life, why not let them be part of the next chapter? Whether through a dramatic entrance or a quiet symbolic gesture, your equine companion can bring grace, heart, and a touch of magic to your special day – after all they have been with you every step (hoof) of the way!
